Can a GPS Tracker Be Jammed? How Car Thieves Use Jammers and What Still Protects You

Every car owner who installs a tracker eventually hears the same story: “Thieves just use a jammer now, the tracker is useless.” The worry is understandable. A GPS tracker jammer is a real tool, it has been reported in car thefts in Pakistan for more than a decade, and it can stop a tracker from reporting while it is switched on.

But “can be jammed” is not the same as “is useless”. A jammer interrupts the signal. It does not erase what the tracker already sent, it does not stop the platform from noticing that a vehicle has gone quiet, and it does nothing against an engine that will not start or a steering wheel that is locked.

Here is what jamming does to a tracker, where the law in Pakistan stands, and what still protects your car or fleet.

How a GPS Tracker Jammer Affects Your Tracker

A vehicle tracker does two separate jobs. It works out where it is using satellite signals, and it sends that position to a server over the mobile network, the same GSM network your phone uses. A jammer floods one or both channels with noise.

Blocking the satellite signal

Satellite signals are weak by the time they reach the ground, so interference can drown them out, leaving a frozen position or no fix at all.

Blocking the mobile network

This is the one most associated with GSM jammer car theft. If the tracker cannot reach the network, it cannot report its location or receive commands from the owner’s app. A 2012 ProPakistani article described GSM jammers as a large scale tool for car lifters in Pakistan, and noted that they were easy to find in the market.

So, can a car tracker be blocked? Yes, for as long as a working jammer is close to it. Any provider who says otherwise is overselling.

Using or Selling a Jammer Is Illegal in Pakistan

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has stated that installing jamming devices or disablers without permission is illegal. Under a government policy, authorisation for jammers sits with an inter-ministerial committee at the Ministry of IT, in the context of national security.

Enforcement does happen. PTA has reported a joint raid with the Federal Investigation Agency at the Karachi Electronic Market in Saddar, where 30 jammers were recovered and sellers were arrested. PTA cited its powers under the Pakistan Telecommunication (Re-organization) Act 1996 and warned of strict action against anyone selling or installing jammers.

Rules can change, so confirm the current position with PTA if it matters legally. If you find a jammer in or near a vehicle, treat it as evidence and report it to the police.

What Still Protects You When a Tracker Goes Quiet

No single measure defeats jamming. What works is layering, so that a thief has to beat several things at once, and quickly.

The last known location

A tracker reports while it has a signal, including the moments before a jammer is switched on. The last known location, plus the trip history leading up to it, tells you where and when the vehicle went dark. That narrows the search far more than “it was stolen sometime last night”.

Alerts that fire before the jammer does

Ignition alerts and geofence alerts are useful here. If your car’s ignition comes on at 3 a.m. outside its usual parking spot, you get a message while the tracker is still connected. Route history on a platform such as Fleetile’s GPS tracking adds context for a fleet manager.

Jamming detection

Some devices notice interference and raise an alert, or log the event and report it when the signal returns. This is what people usually mean by an anti-jammer car tracker. Detection is not perfect, as some banks and security vehicles also run jammers, causing false alarms. Ask your provider whether their device detects jamming, what the alert looks like in the app, and what happens to the data recorded while the signal was lost.

A tracker that is hard to find

Many thieves simply look for the tracker and pull its power. A hardwired unit in a hidden spot takes far longer to find than a plug-in device, and a sudden power cut should raise an alert. If your tracker keeps going offline for no obvious reason, our GPS tracker troubleshooting guide helps you tell a fault from something more worrying.

A second, independent tracker

Some owners of high value vehicles fit a second, separate device elsewhere in the car. A thief who disables one may not expect another.

The Immobiliser and Physical Locks

Tracking tells you where a car is. An immobiliser decides whether it can move. A remote engine cut, sent while the tracker is still connected, can stop a vehicle from being driven away in the first place. Our remote engine immobiliser guide explains how to use it safely.

Old fashioned locks still matter too. A steering lock, a gear lock or a wheel clamp does not care about radio signals at all. Each one adds minutes a thief does not have.

A Practical Checklist for Car Owners and Fleets

  • Ask the right questions: does the device detect jamming and power cuts, and how quickly will you be told?
  • Install it properly: hardwired, hidden, and not in the first place a thief would look.
  • Turn on the alerts: ignition, geofence and unusual movement alerts are only useful if they are switched on and someone reads them.
  • Add physical layers: a steering or gear lock costs little and slows everyone down.
  • Have a plan: know who to call and what evidence to share.

For fleets, our guide on how to prevent vehicle theft covers parking, keys and driver procedures too.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a GPS tracker jammer stop my car being tracked completely?

It can stop live reporting while it is on and near the tracker. It cannot remove the history already sent, and good alerts can warn you before the signal drops.

Is it legal to buy a jammer in Pakistan?

PTA has stated that installing jamming devices without permission is illegal, and it has carried out raids with the FIA against sellers.

What is an anti-jammer car tracker?

It is a tracker designed to detect interference and respond, for example by alerting you or logging the event. Ask your provider exactly what their device does when it detects jamming.

Does an immobiliser still work if the tracker is jammed?

A remote engine cut needs the tracker to receive the command, so it is most useful when sent before the signal is lost, which is why early ignition and geofence alerts matter.
